The Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) 360, developed by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, is a comprehensive tool designed to assess and enhance leadership effectiveness within organizations. This foundational research instrument for The Leadership Challenge, provides leaders with valuable insights into their behaviors and practices by collecting feedback from various sources, including peers, supervisors, and direct reports.
By evaluating The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership—Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart—the LPI 360 encourages leaders to reflect on their strengths and areas for growth. This feedback fosters a culture of trust and transparency, ultimately empowering leaders to align their actions with organizational goals and drive positive change within their teams. As a result, the LPI 360 serves as a vital resource for organizations aiming to cultivate impactful leadership and achieve sustained success.
The LPI is also available in a self-scoring only version and a student leadership version.
5 PRACTICES
Kouzes and Posner asked the question, “What do leaders do when they are at their best?” Through extensive research the answer produced The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership: Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart. These are the principles in which the LPI measures leadership behavior.
10 COMMITTMENTS
Great leaders have more than just principles. They have a set of commitments to the responsibility that they have to those that they lead. The 10 Commitments are just that. The LPI helps leaders become aware of how well they are doing with their own leadership commitment.
30 BEHAVIORS
The 30 behaviors are a set of measurable, learnable, and teachable set of behaviors that have been identified in the most influential leaders across many industries in many different countries. The LPI helps individuals and organizations measure their leadership competencies by providing a structured means in which to collect and analyze the data.
FEEDBACK
Feedback is a gift and the cornerstone of any assessment. The LPI offers visuals of the results through data summaries and line graphs. The LPI360 allows observes to offer feedback in multiple ways: through data collection, and written feedback. Leaders can take this feedback and through the Leadership Challenge workshop an/or with the help of a Certified Coach, take action to strengthen their leadership capabilities.
